Vintage button love

I adore vintage buttons, so I was really excited to see that Sally of Shim + Sons is organizing a new vintage button swap! You have to sign up by 5:00 pm tomorrow and send out by April 13 — all the details are here. I can’t wait — as a matter of fact, I just went to the Melrose flea market on Sunday and found all these buttons from a vendor there for $10, so I can easily pick out 12 nice ones to send out. So if you turn out to be my swap partner, be sure to let me know what your favorite colors are!

My vintage buttons from the Melrose flea market

My button obsession started early — this is a page from my favorite book* as a kid, which I swear has shaped my whole life. I vividly remember how much I loved arranging and rearranging my button and trinket stash. I kept them all in jars, but the matchbox-shoebox lid idea is a good one too.

And of course I’ll definitely have to stop by the Button Emporium and Ribbonry for a scouting expedition — not that I need any more buttons, but you never know…

*more on this tomorrow

  1. i can see why we’re friends! i spent a lot of time sorting and organizing my mom’s button stash. i also loved to take all of my grandmothers hankies and scarves out of her little hankie drawer and lay them all out. it was one of my favorite pasttimes.
hmmm…i feel like i should sign up for this button swap!!

  2. oh fun! when I was little I was obsessed with my mother’s tin of buttons–an old cookie tin with a horse and carriage on the front and the most wonderful odd lot of buttons inside– she still has it and I still go through it and pull things out whenever I go home!

  3. Reading that makes me wonder what Jack will be like as an adult. Will he still hoard a button collection? Will he still be sorting and arranging things?

  4. Buttons and trims are the first things I look for at thrift stores and garage sales.

  5. Is this from Childcraft book (9?) with the green binding color? My favorite book in the world! It was so much more worn than the others in the series in our house.
    I love your buttons.

  6. I love vintage buttons and the ones you have in the picture are darlin’. I have all mine in a big mason jar in my craft room. Those little baubles are so alluring.

  8. ohhh my favourite thing at grandma’s was her button tin! it was this massive old blue tin she’d pull out of her linen cupboard and my sister and I would sit for hours putting them in colours, picking our favourites…. my mum and i were devastated that my super generous grandma gave it away to someone – not in the family!!!!!!!!!!1 at least she gave me all of her knitting patterns this year!

  9. With the 70s and 80s back in style, I just loving vintage clothing from the thrift shops. You can find designers like Chanel and Armani for cheap there.
