some things that happened this week
August 6, 2008 at 9:35 am | Posted in chatty, house crafty, I love to make things... | 7 CommentsI got some more sewing done: a set of swaddling blankets for a friend’s baby! The single most useful thing we have for Pearl is a good swaddling blanket so I wanted to make some muslin ones for summer. I’m planning to write up a tutorial next week if anyone else wants to stitch some up.
We went out for ice cream and I was really pleased to see that Baskin-Robbins has not changed their hot-fudge labels since I was a child going to the one at Cameron Village for a treat (always a mint chocolate chip cone). I have to say I love this 70s design… I’m not such a fan of the “BR” logo.
We actually grew some things in our garden! Now we have four tiny green tomatoes and one in-progress pepper. I’m not sure if anyone would believe me without photographic evidence, so here is the very first one:
And our pink dahlias are blooming — they came with the house, so I can’t take any credit for them, but they are lovely.
I’ll also post some pictures of my new craft room next week… I’m so excited about it.

congratulations on the literal fruit of your labor in the garden! and those dahlias are amazing- they look good enough to eat.
and swaddling blankets, BIG ONES are so key. yours are beautiful, and summer weight too? perfect. i don’t understand why they only sell them teeny tiny (other than those swaddle design ones, which Sophie only barely still fits into). i keep trying to get her out of the swaddle but she needs it to fall asleep (despite getting out and sleeping all sprawled once she is actually asleep), so I’m going to have to start making some that fit her bigger body!

Those swaddling blankets look so comfy! I love the colors.
I’m not a fan of all these initial logos either, DQ, BR. I’m definitely with you and prefer the old designs!
Your tomato and dahlias look great! We are slowly getting into the yard and garden around here.

Dahlias are one of my favorite flowers. I’m looking forward to the tutorial, I’ve got some friends here who would love ones for warmer weather.

I totally agree about the swaddling blankets…best thing ever! My boys were born in February, so ours were double layers of flannel, and like Nancy mentioned…BIG! (Both boys wouldn’t sleep without them until they were over 6 months old! We had to safety pin them to keep them from unwrapping and waking up. Oh, those newborn days.)
Thanks for sharing!

I love those swaddling blankets! I’ve been wanting to make some, but I’ve had a hard time finding nice feeling muslin. Where did you get your fabric? Thanks! I’m looking forward to your tutorial!

Hi. I stumbled upon your blog as I searched for tutorials of muslin swaddling blankets. I see you mentioned doing a tutorial for these, did you ever get around to it? Do you think you could email me directions if not?
