four giveaways for the holidays!

Okay, I’m back, after a crazy couple of days and (thankfully) some good news after a long wait, and I’m so excited to give away some cool crafty things! I’m going to cram mini-reviews of three lovely craft books plus a Portland-only bonus into this one little post so forgive the single photo of each book… rest assured that they are fantastic through and through!

First up is a surprise to go with the other two — I decided to add one more of my personal favorites, the Softies Kit, to the up-for-grabs mix. This is such a nice one. You get 15 patterns plus all the materials for making one softie on the spot. I think my favorite in this collection (which is edited down from the equally lovely book Softies) is the Lucky Elephant — just look at her peeking out on the left! Aw.

The Softies Kit - win a copy!

There’s also the Fuzzy Felted Friends book from the Kyuuto! series, an instant favorite. This thing is adorable from cover to cover, and the projects are divided into two worlds: Items for Everyday Life and Cute Animals. Really, what else do you need in this world? My favorite project here is the charming family of Mouse Pincushions — as a bonus, the wool helps keep your needles from rusting due to its natural oils.

Last is Amy Butler’s Little Stitches for Little Ones. She’s designed 20 keepsake sewing projects for a new family and beyond: clothes, comforts, decor, playthings, and more, all with her trademark attention to detail and signature fabrics and style. There are some gorgeous baby things to make to choose from, but the one that really caught my eye was the Patchwork Crib/Playtime Quilt — beautiful, versatile, and goes right in the washing machine.

Please leave a comment on this post between now and noon (Pacific time) Wednesday, December 10 for a chance to win one of the three, letting me know something you’re planning to make for holidays — a gift, decoration, recipe, anything you’re excited about. If you’re not a holidays type, something else crafty you’re up to will do nicely. I’ll randomly pick three people on Wednesday and mail them out after that! I am very sorry to restrict things, but US addresses only, please, due to the cost of shipping these heavy things. When I do a kit giveaway I promise I’ll make it international since they are nice and light.

I did say four, so there’s one more in-person giveaway, for Portland folks: I will be signing my book, Bead Simple, and showing how to make earrings at the Oregon Historical Society’s Holiday Cheer authors event on Sunday, from 1-4. I would love it if you could stop by and say hi! If anyone who reads my blog mentions that you found out about the event here, I will be happy to give you one of my new earring kits as a thank-you for visiting.

Holiday Cheer - Oregon Historical Society

It should be a really cool afternoon, with dozens of Oregon authors who write in different genres there — I am super excited about meeting Chelsea Cain, seeing Caren and Carl of Velveteria, and getting my copies of The Portland Bridge Book, Portland: People, Politics and Power, and An Architectural Guidebook to Portland signed. For those not as obsessed with our city, there will be lots of cookbook, fiction, children’s and nature authors there too; I am just a Portland nerd so my faves list is embarrassingly specific. I’m sure I’ll find lots more good books, too — all the sales benefit the Oregon Historical Society, which is a nice bonus. Anyway, I’d love to see some crafty folks there! Thank you to OHS for having me, and especially to Lucy for suggesting me as a participant.

Last thing (can you tell I meant to post yesterday?!): Diane has written the newest edition of her awesome Christmas zine with Katin and copies are for sale for just $5 apiece in her shop! I adore this publication. It is filled with cool stuff and projects (here are some peeks) and more than anything else this year it is making me so excited for Christmas. Hooray! Don’t miss the chance to snap one up too.

Diane + Katin's Christmas zine!

So just leave me a comment with a favorite holiday project by Wednesday for your chance to win a craft book, and good luck everyone! Have a lovely weekend.

  1. Aw, thanks for the shout-out! I’m so glad you liked the zine. We had a great time making it! XOXOX

  2. These are some great giveaway, Susan! So far I have made an Amy Butler Weekender Bag for my sister, a Blue Sky Hat for my mother, the patchwork quilted bag at the back of In Stitches for my sister-in-law, and two picnic blankets with rock pockets (from the awesome erin for some friends. I don’t have time for much more, since all my gifts have to be shipped across the country! Oh — and I’m also baking cookies to send with some of these. It’s all keeping me busy!

  3. I already knit a hat for my brother and will spend the rest of my December making cookies.

  4. I saw the softies kit today and it is very cute. my favorite project is making ornaments. one year i made felt horses for all of the children in my son’s grade school class. they were quite the hit.

  5. I am crocheting fingerless gloves and matching scarfletts for my co-workers, and I have a couple of bead projects to finish still too, but it’s not Christmas yet!

  6. Oh, this is such a great giveaway–I’d love to win! My sister-in-law and good friend are both due to give birth to their first babies this spring. I need all the help (homemade giftwise) I can get!

Right now I’m working on a quilted place-mat and napkin set to give to someone in my family and so far it’s my favorite.

Thanks for the chance to win!
    Lyndsay

  7. I am going to make a knitted hat for my niece Nora but am having a difficult time finding a pattern I like. I also have been making stuffed owls for friends and they are also for sale at Powell’s Home and garden store. I love them so much, it was hard to leave them there. http://www.jujubird.com

  8. What a fantastic giveaway – thanks for the chance to win! I’m crafting a ton this season, so it’s hard to choose a favorite, but mine just might be the scrapbook of old family photos that I’m putting together for my mom. I’m digitizing all of the pictures from my grandmother’s childhood and putting them on a DVD, then putting all of the originals into a nice, new album (acid-free, unlike the old paste-in album that they have been in since the 40s). I know that she is going to love it.

  9. My 3 year old’s imaginary play mostly involves camping these days. I am going to make her a skirt from the easy skirt pattern with a night time camping scene appliqued and hopefully a modified version of the portable house (to become a portable tent).

  10. I am going to take a day off and spend it spinning yarn and knitting myself a sweater :)

  11. I’ve just started making some Christmas bunting to decorate the house. I’m also making lots of little trees out of fabric and felt. Most of my Christmas crafting is decoration oriented.

  12. Yay for giveaways! Hm… I really need a Christmas tree skirt, so I’m planning on making one out of cool burlap coffee bags.

  13. Ooh, those books look fun! :) I have been making kid-friendly decorations this year. I’ve been using lots of hard candy, paper doilies, and pretty yarn for my projects! I’m also planning to make some scrappy stockings for my two boys. And on and on… all I ever want to do is craft. And then blog about it! Ha ha!

  14. Hi,
the softies and the cool looking mice look neat. The cats would love the mice…..

I just finished making flannel pj pants, with a matching fabric heart applique on a rtw turtleneck, for my almost 3 year old. They have to wear holiday pj’s for their Christmas program that they are doing at their Childrens Day Out program at church. I make the kwik sew master pattern for pants with the cuff option. I really like these, as they cover up the baby be-hinny!

    Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  15. Totes for my mom to carry all her stuff on her Bus commute. She made a special request for pockets for water bottles and clips for keys. I also made my first quilt for my grandmother who is my true inspiration with all my crafting.

  16. I just learned how to embroider. I am working on embroidering a dachshund right now, but my favorite is the headbands i just made

  17. My roommate is a history buff and we recently went to a showing of WPA posters from WWII. I found several WPA posters in the public domain in digital form. I printed these on fabric and I’m making a lap quilt for him. I just started it and I hope I can get it quilted in time.

Thank you for hosting the giveaway.

  18. What a wonderful giveaway! I am working on 2 baby quilts for my best friends’ babies and the rest…I still have 19 days right?

  19. My biggest creative project this season is planning a (hopefully) beautiful meal for ten people at my home Christmas Day. I haven’t done anything on this scale before and am excited for the chance to do it but anxious too!

I would love the Amy Butler book as I adore sewing for my young daughter!

    Thank you!

  20. Last year I made a forest of soft trees:

I love that there is a Flickr group so you can see everyone else’s soft trees too:

  21. I’m really excited for my fiance to open his present made out of “upcycled” felted sweaters. Just in case he follows me over from my blog in a little gift giving research, I can’t say more than I’ve already said! I’ve been eyeing that zine, but I’ve never been an impulse buyer. Well, sometimes. Usually I have to mull it over a bit. So I have, with that zine, since I heard about it. I guess it’s about time for me to get a copy. Maybe even time for me to get a copy, read it, and send it to my brother with his present!

  22. Well, my husband has managed to make tons of hats. That counts for something, right? LOL I have no idea what to make this year…

  23. My husband and daughter and I are going to be a baking factory this holiday, chocolate chip banana bread and cranberry cookies are at the top of the list. Baking together is a fun way to spend cold, gloomy weekends, and our friends and families will like to munch all the goodies! Thanks for the book giveaway-they all look lovely!

  24. I am working on bean bag chairs (from the pattern over at (stardustshoes) for my nephews and niece. Here’s hoping I get them done! I love your blog!

  25. I’m making fudge for many of our Christmas gifts this year. And have been eyeing that Amy Butler book since I first read about it. My library doesn’t have it! You are so sweet to do a giveaway. I love reading about your projects.

  26. I am having so much fun making felt food for some little ones and can’t wait to give it to them on Christmas! This is where I got the patterns: http://buggabugs.blogspot.com/search/label/Felt%20Food I’d love to win the Softies Kit!

  27. my list is long & I am so behind. I’m working on pajamas for the dads, hobo gloves for the mister, reusable produce bags for friends & tonight I finished up my contribution to an ornament swap!

the softies kit would be awesome, but any of the books would be a welcome addition.

  28. My 18-year-old niece just moved out on her own for the first time, so I’m making her an apron made from fabric featuring Japanese Manga characters, since her favorite hobby is drawing Manga. I know she’s going to love it.

  29. fav holiday project? Making gingerbread houses with my daughter, mother and grandmother. It’s so fun both making and watching the others get so involved and break out of their shells!

  30. Am I the only one who thinks the mice are creepy looking? Maybe it’s because I have a real live wee friend that I cannot.get.rid.of.

With twins on the way, I am most excited about learning how to knit booties! The other thing I am excited about it a sweater recycling craft to make mittens out of felted sweaters. After pinning namecards to the finished pairs, we’ll use them as tags on the ‘main gift’ (matted and framed photos by Husband)

  31. Christmas is at my house this year so I’ve already decorated inside & outside

  32. I have to finish binding a queen-size quilt for my mother- I did not quilt it so it looks pretty professional- my best one yet and I’ll be so happy that I actually finished it within the year because I started Jan 1. I would also like to finish a placemat with paper-pieced christmas balls on it. and a hand quilted lap-sized quilt featuring camping and animals for my father.

  33. I love the little kit of Softie patterns! I just made some little softie puppies for my nephew and they are addictive! They end up looking so cute! Way better than store bought stuffies!

  34. I love the felted friends and softie kits – so cute! I’m making little stuffed felt owl ornaments for my sister’s tree – almost done!

  35. That Amy Butler book looks lovely! You’ve inspired me to attempt sewing post-baby. I hope the recipient isn’t reading this, but I got all excited about the Two Tone Apron from Sewing Republic – it looked like a 70′s wrap skirt! – and make one. It was really easy and cute and now I keep thinking who else I make it for. I think that’s a mark of a good project, when you want to make more!

  36. I’ve already made two advent calenders, I’m also planning on making bunting in holiday colours, and a record bag for my brother, the aspiring DJ!

  37. I am making cards and ornaments. I love crafting with my friends during the holidays!

  38. What a fun giveaway! Those books look great. My favorite holiday craft for this year is candle making. I decided to try it for the first time, and I love it! I’ll be giving one to pretty much everyone on my guest list. :)

  39. I am making all the presents this year – a beach blanket, stash & dash bags, a sunhat, aprons and christmas pillows.

  40. Let’s see–I have a scarf I just finished for my brother with some cool thick and thin wool, a fringed shawl for my mom, and, if all goes well, decoupage Christmas ornaments for most everyone else. I can’t wait to do the decoupage!

  41. Great Prizes!!
I making Stenciled Tees (with freezer paper) for everyone on my list this year. Its fun and easy, and i make them very personalized- so i think they turn out pretty unique too.

  42. Awesome giveaway! I’m for sure making these chocolate cherry mice for my dad (http://poppypaperie.typepad.com/poppy_paperie/2008/10/chocolate-mouse-tag-box.html) who loves maraschino cherries. I’m also making about a zillion aprons.

  43. HI there-
I am working on a vintage button tree-so cute, lots of garland and personalized felt ornaments. Great site!
    Wendy

  44. Those books look awesome. I am working on some knitted scarves and hats for my mom and mother-in-law. I am also hoping to squeeze in some felt ornaments for the tree because it’s looking a little sparse. And of course I have to make some candy buckeyes, that’s a big hit with my hubby.

  45. ooooh. Something crafty I’m making for the holidays? Well right now I’m up to my ears in screen printing onesies for the Crafty Wonderland Holiday Sale! Hopefully once this weekend is over I’ll get to make some gifts. I’m thinking pot holders and napkins for the loved ones. Hope the holiday season is treating you right!

  46. I am making salted caramels using black Hawaiian sea salt and Norwegian rosettes (family recipe and a tradition brought back), these will be given as gifts to people I really like!
I will also host a gingerbread decorating party for friends and family and make each child a house to decorate.
I want to learn how to felt this year, and that will be my “new years resolution” that was made back in November…

  47. Hey there! We’ll be making garlands for the Christmas tree this year, and we also make graham cracker houses to decorate every year…
    -Phebe

  48. I want to felt some little friends! So cute. I’ve seen someone make felted balls before but can’t understand how you’d make forms like that with little noses, etc. But for now I’m making some felt and leather coasters, and thinking about stenciling some t-shirts for my kids.

  49. The Amy Butler book looks beautiful! I’ve knitted hats for my Dad and brother, as well as a beaded shawl for my mom. I’ve quilted some coasters for my grandmothers, and everyone I know is getting homemade hot chocolate mix and bread dipping seasonings. I love crafting for other people, and the holidays are always a good excuse to do so! :)

  50. Oh, those felted mice are adorable! I have lots of crafty holiday items on my list, including a scarf for my mom, leg warmers for my sister in law, and pants and bibs for my little baby nephew. Now I just have to find the time to make them all!

  51. Hi Miss Crafty!

I just wanted to drop a line and let you know that I saw you and Baby Pearl in another blog!

    http://www.themudflats.net/2008/12/05/oregon-mudstock/

    You are a blog celebrity!

    Happy Holidays.

(Please exempt me from your drawing, as I’ve already won one of your giveaways earlier this year.)

  52. oh geez, where to begin. i have knit the chevron scarf for my sister, a cowl for my mil, a hat for my fil, some fingerless mitts for my kids gymnastics coach, a few hats for some others, a scarf/hat hybrid for my sil and i am planning on sewing the gratitude stationary holder on soulemama for my far away nieces and nephews.

  53. Nice giveaway!

My favorite holiday project is the Zakka Style Owl Pendent (http://moonstitches.typepad.com/moonstitches/2007/11/zakka-style-owl.html) because it’s simple yet lovely. I also like how it could be used for decoration all year round, to spruce things up and add cheer–whenever!

  54. My family of choice decided to NOT give gifts this year except to the kids…and they both want gift cards. Boohoo. So no gift making except that now I have decided I want to make warm wool hats for those guys who are out in all weather picking up our trash. That Softie kit is to die for..but gosh those mice are wonderful too. I may have to buy myself some gifts.

  55. Such a generous giveaway! Wow! My favourite gifts that I’ve handcrafted this year are my ornaments that I’m using to label my gifts… they are cute and will be a lovely addition to the trees of my loved ones!

  56. I got the same requests to add some info to Book Blogs. Do you think I should make a group about bookish charities, mention it in the discussion, or leave these kinds of things out of the site altogether? What do you think?

  57. Yea, I wish I had more money to give gifts this year as well. The holidays this year ended up with a wimper.
