I have a little announcement/celebration/giveaway today: I haven’t had a chance to mention it much until now, but I have a new craft book coming out next month called Button It Up! I’m so excited to have something to share after all these months, and to celebrate, I’d like to offer up some of my own button treasures as well as a couple of signed copies of the book for a crafty giveaway!

Button It Up - cover!

I got to include 80 original projects to make with vintage (or new) buttons, from jewelry and embellishments to housewares and stationery. Two dozen of my favorite crafters each contributed a project (including how to cast your very own buttons, which is so cool), and I also got to write up a fun little history of buttons… you can see some peeks at that chapter if you search inside on Amazon.

Button It Up - table of contents

I’ve built a little book website and planned a couple of Portland book events in March to get crafty with some of my favorite bits and pieces from my own collection. More on those soon too!

Button It Up - button link necklace

I’ve put some more project snapshots in this flickr set, and I’ll be adding lots more as sneak peeks, too…

Button It Up - knotted bracelet

Like Bead Simple, each project has a variation, so you can see two different takes on the same idea — super-specific how-tos are really cool, but I think there’s something nice about a flexible project you can make with buttons from your stash, or put your own spin on.

Button It Up - button hoop earrings

But totally unlike Bead Simple, I was excited to include some sewing, gluing, and embellishing to create a mix of housewares, clothes, bags, toys, decorations and accessories, along with plenty of jewelry. (After doing over a hundred wearable jewelry pieces for the first collection, it was really nice to go in some other directions this time!)

Button It Up - dinner party set

And while most of the projects are fun pieces to make in an afternoon, using what you have handy in your own stash, for the times you want to use something really special, I’ve put together a list of all my favorite resources for vintage and new craft supplies — including profiles of my two favorite button stores in the world.

Button It Up - big-eyed owl button toy

Okay, on to the giveaway! You can pre-order the book on Amazon or look for it in a few weeks (March 3, to be exact) at your favorite local bookstore, but in the meantime, I’d like to offer up two signed books to win, from my own author copies. I’m also putting together two button grab bags with some of my favorites from my own collection — I’ll add some other craft supplies and findings too, to get you started on your first few projects. I’ve been finding and saving buttons for years and I’d like to send some out as prizes to celebrate the book coming out!

Rose Bowl flea market in Pasadena--buttons in jars

So, to enter, please leave a comment on this post, telling me something you love about buttons, a good tip for finding them out in the world, or a favorite craft project you’ve made with them… anything button-related will do just fine! I’ll keep the comments open for two weeks, until Tuesday, February 24, and then randomly draw four winners: two will get books, and two will get buttons. International shipping is fine, I’m not restricting this to US readers, so please enter away!

My vintage buttons from the Melrose flea market

The last thing I wanted to mention is that I’m going to be updating both the Button It Up and Bead Simple websites a lot more often, with project ideas, new crafty supplies to try, updates from my lovely guest contributors, and giveaways there too. It’s been a busy year, and I’m excited to do some new things now that I can catch my breath a little bit. I’ll always write about crafty stuff over here, but I wanted to make my book sites more of their own stand-alone bead and button thing, not just my sporadic announcements every few months. I hope you like them, if you’re in the market for yet another crafty place to stop by… I just wrote up another Coraline post, all about buttons this time and that was pretty fun!

Me at the Coraline premiere

Thanks for reading, and an extra thank-you to everyone who cleverly spotted the book somewhere before I “announced” it and had nice things to say. I hope you all like it as much as I do!

  1. Congratulations, Susan! This is wonderful! And the projects look so fun! I have mostly only used buttons for buttoning things, but I love the way that just the right buttons can really make a piece of clothing. This book might be just the sort of thing to help me break out and some more creative things with my buttons!

  2. Wow, congratulations! How exciting. I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of the book; it looks fantastic. The button wine charms are absolutely ingenious. I’ve loved buttons for as long as I can remember – my mom collected vintage buttons for ages, and I loved playing in all of her button baskets and bins when I was growing up. Today, she is gradually passing her collection on to me, and I’m always looking for ways to incorporate buttons into my crafts!

  3. Congratulations. I’ve never met a button I didn’t like. My most recent button project was a simple cloth bookmark with a button sewn at the top. I gave some away with my Pay it Forward book give-away.

  4. Yay Susan! I can’t wait to see your book!

I have found some cool buttons at the Dollar Store, but garage sales and thrift stores are also great places to find button scores. And of course, eBay!

  5. Congrats on your new book! I love love buttons! Im sure you’ve seen the button candy molds from Bake it Pretty? You did a great job on the cover! It looks very martha stewart-esq (in a good way!).

  6. I LOVE buttons. I inherited all my grandmother’s vintage buttons and am always looking for fun projects to use them on. I would go crazy with your book!!

  7. As long as I can remember there have been jars of buttons in my grandma’s house, my mom’s house, and now my house. When I was little I’d dump them all out on the carpet and sort them into piles by size, by color, whatever struck my fancy. Now I’ve inherited my grandma’s buttons and still have the itch to sort. :) My favorite recent project has been to use them on hair clips with ribbon. I’m usually picking them up at garage sales and I’m always looking for throw-away clothing with fancy buttons to cut off.

  8. Buttons are the best! The best place to find buttons is: ask Grandma. I’ve inherited buttons from my grandma and my great-grandma. They used to keep buttons from clothes they were discarding. I love finding projects to use them on!

  9. I have not made these yet…but I am going to make topiaries using styrofoam shapes and covering with buttons. I think they will look really neat (at least I hope!)

  10. I can’t wait for your book to come out!!! So excited.

My daughter and I just finished making a doll out of one of her old dresses. We used matching flower buttons for the eyes, and it turned out so cute. I love collecting and using vintage buttons. I mostly find them at garage sales and thrift stores.

  11. I love vintage buttons because they seem to be a window into the past – what kind of garment was this button attached to (or wanted to be attached to?) What was the person like who originally owned this button?
I like how such a little thing can have such variety and personality.

Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  12. My grandmother had a dozen gallon glass jars of buttons which she had collected for years under her window in the dining room. This was 45 years ago so you can imagine how beautiful the buttons were. So I love buttons for their memories of my grandmother.

  13. My nana works at a thrift store and finds me all sorts of things, including beads and buttons! I have quite a wee collection going – your book will be great to help me put them to use! My favourite project so far has been a wall hanging made from copper wire and buttons, although it was hard on my hands to construct.
    Congratulations on the new book

  14. Congratulations on the book. I can’t wait to get my grubby little paws on it. I’m pretty addicted to vintage buttons. My favorite thing to do with them is wrap some wire around them to turn them into rings. So easy and fun.

  15. congrats! i love buttons because they have served as wonderful replacement “eyes” for my beloved teddy frank for more than thirty years now. i have had him since the day i was born, but i honestly can’t remember what his “real” eyes looked like — i only remember the buttons.

can’t wait to pick up the book, if i don’t win it!

  16. Your book looks amazing, what a labor of love it must have been! I have two favorite memories of buttons…going through my grandmothers danish cookie christmas tins full of buttons and getting to know a dear friend while creating button covered christmas trees!

  17. Wow, what a cool book! I have a nice collection of buttons which have been passed down to me from my mom, my grandma, and my husband’s grandma. While I’ve also bought buttons at random flea markets, thrift stores, and white elephant sales, my favorites are still those that my family has given me. When I was little I used to make dolls out of yarn and sew button eyes on them, but lately I’ve been trying to use them more to decorate accessories and things that I knit. :)

  18. This book looks great! I’ve recently discovered the joy of buttons, as I inherited the contents of my grandmother’s sewing room, complete with a big tin of old buttons. When I found a lovely silk blouse at Goodwill that was missing several buttons, I dug through the tin of buttons to find the perfect set of creamy fabric-covered buttons to complement the little off-white polka dots on the blouse. And now I can think of my grandmother every time I wear it!

  19. I can’t believe you were able to find that many buttons! I am chronically button-dereft.

Currently, I’m scouring the thrift stores looking for pink and red buttons to tie onto a tied Valentine quilt.

  20. Congrats on the new book! My favorite button thing is my grandmother’s old tin of buttons. I used to play with them for hours. Sorting them by size, color, favorites etc… Sometimes I can’t bear to use buttons because I just want to horde them!

  21. Call me anal, but I sort my few buttons by color in an embroidery floss box. I love buttons, but can’t seem to find them in the thrifty stores near me. Mom had several tobacco tins filled to the rim with buttons – mostly army green from Dad’s fatigues.

  22. Congratulations on the book! It looks great(from the sneak peeks). I fell in love with buttons when I found my mother’s mason jar full of old buttons. They were so pretty and each one unique. I find myself collecting them even though I don’t have anything to do with them. This book looks like it will be a great inspiration! Thanks!

  23. Congratulations Susan! Can’t wait to see it. I still have high hopes of this one inspirational button covered chair project. I realized it will take me years to save up enough mother-of-pearl buttons for it, but half the fun is in the collecting, right?

  24. I just found your blog! Wow – I didn’t know the Coraline movie embellished button collecting. I’ll have to see it for sure now since I’m a button-holic. And your book will be the first thing I go hunt for tomorrow. Buttons are indeed a girl’s best friend! Thank you for all your work and sharing the love….Julie

  25. I love buttons of all kinds. I replace the buttons on my sweaters and jackets with a selection of vintage or fun buttons from my collections–no two alike. Since I work in a fairly buttoned-up industry (heh), people often don’t get it or think it’s odd to have mismatched buttons. But once in a while it pays off–people bring me buttons from their grandmother/mother/aunt they don’t know what to do with. Hurray for me–an easy way to get some great buttons.

  26. I have something to admit, I’m a button addict. I can’t go past buying a good set at the local thrift store and I’ve been known to buy them in online auctions. My favourite ones are found in the old estate sales. You get some real old “gems” there. :)

I’d so love to win a copy of your book – it looks fantastic!

  27. No need to include me in the drawing because I’m planning on buying a copy at one of your signings (but which one–Powells or Bolt? I can’t decide!). I just wanted to say that last night I remembered that I bought some great vintage glazed ceramic buttons from Heath last summer (in the upper right corner of this photo), and I’m super excited to make something beautiful with them!

  28. Old outdated clothing often has the most wonderful buttons! Snip off the buttons for one project, then cut up or unravel the clothing item for another project.
    The book looks amazing! Congratulations!

  29. When I was 15 I got a jar of buttons at a yard sale. They were in a vintage glass jar with a red lid. They were so magical to me even though I didn’t know how to sew and had no idea what i was going to do with them. 20 years later when I finally did learn how to sew, I dug out that jar of buttons and they were even better than i remembered.

Yeah Buttons, your book looks great!

  30. Congratulations! Your Bead Simple book has been so helpful to me. This one looks fun, too! I have a bag of beads left from my grandmother who was a professional seamstress. I’ve covered a framed painters canvas with fabric and then glued on some of her matching buttons. I can always find great buttons at the Brimfield Antique Show http://www.brimfieldshow.com/ .

  31. Susan,

You are amazing. I love your blog, your books and the fact that you love buttons!
I am a Portlander — and frequent shopper of Cool Cottons — Pam and Marie and I always end up chatting about your latest blog posting or Sunset magazine article.

Anyways, I love vintage buttons because they tell a story. Ironically enough, I just wrote some blog posts about how I feel about buttons…

Thanks for all you do Susan. You are inspiring hundreds people like myself, in a time where everyone needs a little light at the end of the tunnel!

    -Sarah

  32. Congratulations on your fab new book! I’ve had it on my Amazon wishlist as soon as I saw the title :D
I got some of my favourite buttons in a button-swap on Craftster; I’ve also started to cut off all the buttons before scrapping a garment and recently inherited a huge vintage button-collection from my Grandmother.

  33. Congratulations on your book! It looks absolutely beautiful! I was a Peace Corps volunteer in rural Costa Rica and my host family had a little store off the side of their house. They sold all sorts of things from machetes to christening gowns. Within this random assortment of goods were jars of vintage buttons. I would love to go in there and run my hands through them and think about how they got to this small town of 300 people on the Nicaraguan border. And then I would buy a few…

  34. Your book looks awesome, Susan! I’m really excited about all of the projects you have pictured here. Like several people have mentioned, I have loved buttons since childhood and I still enjoy just pulling them out and sorting through them forever. My mom has given me a small fraction of my grandmother’s collection of vintage buttons. These are my favorite, however, I have found many at thrift stores (around here the church affiliated ones often seem to have the best selection of craft supplies). I sometimes look for shirts that have interesting buttons if I need to find a specific number of matching buttons.

  35. Congratulations! I’m biased too because living in Portland, I love seeing our local artists’ successes! Find buttons? Thrift shops, estate sales, garage sales, and Knitten Kitten! Uses? Many, but one that stands out to inspire creativity. My daughter and her friends (think pre-teen) love going into our craft room and exploring the button jars. They pour them into bowls, touch, sort, imagine, plan, talk, etc… I love to both be a part of this, or stay in the background. Buttons, imagine that! Keeps them busy for a long while, and gets them thinking and wanting to be creative!

  36. yay! what a fun book! i have a very small collection of vintage buttons, and my favorite thing i’ve made with them was to take all my favorites, and sew them all over the yoke of a plain cardigan. it’s a cute way to show them off.

  37. Congrats on the new book chica! You are totally one crafty & rockin’ mama!

  38. Congratulations on your new book!

I love buttons because they can last such a long time – I have a few that my grandma saved from when she was a kid. I haven’t decided what to do with them yet.

  39. congrats! will you maybe be doing a button craft at an upcoming crafty wonderland like you did last year with bead simple? (thats how my girlfriend and i found out about your stuff!) my favorite craft made with buttons has to be these really cool button stack earrings my girlfriend made for me and her around the holidays in december. hers are all sorts of shades of orange and brown and mine are green and blue. they’re so cute and clever!

p.s. if i won one of your giveaways, it would go to my gf, Sarah. :)

  40. I think I first started to love buttons when I realized that they did not like me! Whenever I would buy shirts or jackets, a button always ends up falling off (unbeknownst to me) and I end up having to shop for buttons to replace it. (because the clothes that come with the replacement buttons are never the ones to lost buttons). While button shopping, I’ve discovered so many different kinds of beautiful and wonderful buttons. My favorite kind of shop has buttons in bins where you can reach your hands into them and let the buttons fall through your fingers while you sort.

  41. oh my gosh! button it up looks BEAUTIFUL! congratulations on another gorgeous work, Susan.

  42. I’ve been collecting buttons for years – from old clothes, things I’ve made and buying ‘impossible to resist’ buttons I see. Your books looks like it has wonderful ideas. Congratulations

  43. Susan: it’s beautiful but I knew it would be! I’m delighted for you and can’t wait to hold a copy in my hands.

  44. A new button book! Thank you!!! I also have loved buttons since childhood and have jars I so love to look at that I can hardly use them in crafts!

  45. The new button book is on my craft book wish list – it looks wonderful! My favorite buttons are the vintage looking plastic ones with scallops and other tiny details. I just picked up a great new jar of buttons at a thrift store over the weekend and have already incorporated some heart shaped buttons into my crocheted valentine cards, and used star shaped buttons as eyes on a toy unicorn that I just finished up for my daughter for Valentine’s Day. I really hope I win – I would love and use either prize!

  46. I love that 90% of my button stash is made up of buttons from my Grandmother. Each time I marvel at the beauty of one of her buttons, I imagine her doing the same. I suspect the buttons are magical!

  47. I love buttons. I have many fond memories of my grandma’s button jar. My favorite button projects are the different types of Christmas trees (ones made with form cones or on velvet covered wood) you can create with buttons.

  48. I <3 (::) s, especially vintage ones!!! I <3 the sound that they make when you push your hand through a big ol’ pile of them or when you let them fall from one hand to another…klick-klick-klick-klick-klick…ohhhh and when they look like little pieces of candy or chocolates all spread out or piled up on a table! yum!!! lately, i’ve been obsessing over ones that happen to be attached to skeleton keys…C(::)raline!

  49. Hi Susan! My favorite vintage button project was making my sister’s ring pillows for her weddings. I found these huge seafoam green buttons with rhinestones that were perfect for her green and pink wedding. they anchored the ribbons that tied the rings.

  50. My favorite thing about buttons is that they add spunk to anything. I safty pin buttons to sweaters to use as broaches and cover purses completely in them for a scaley effect. I always find a stash at the thrigt store.

  51. Congrats on the book! I love getting buttons at antique and thrift stores. There is one antique store here in my little town that almost always has something that will work for whatever little knit project I’m working on at the time. My most recent project involving buttons was a slew of snake shaped scarves for Christmas gifts with button eyes. It was fun looking for the perfect buttons to match the color and texture of each.

  52. Congratulations on your new book! I can’t wait to see it when it comes out. And of course I’d love to win a copy! Buttons are super fun to get crafty with. My grandmother gave me a tin canister full of buttons from her and her mother (my great grandmother) so I have lots of old buttons to play with. Thanks for the chance to win this great giveaway!

  53. I have a quilted jam jar full of my mother’s buttons. Opening that jar conjures up 1965: an old sweater of my dad’s, white blouses with peter pan colors, and rag doll eyes. I love the feeling of buttons. The sounds, the smell and the slippy feel of plastic and the cold clanky metals – but mostly the happy visual of these portable gems.

  54. Yay Susan, this book looks absolutely beautiful. I adore Bead Simple and this I’m sure will be a very welcome edition to the craft shelf (and it comes out on the same day my cousin’s baby is due which is also my sister’s birthday, what an auspicious day !).

I love buttons, I don’t have as many as you but I love every single one I have. I think my absolute favourites are the jet buttons my grandma gave me last year. She has had them since the 30s when her mother cut them off a coat and saved them. My grandma said she hadn’t ever made anything special enough to sew them onto but that she hopes I will. They are truly beautiful and they make me feel connected not just to my grandma but to my great grandma as well.

My other button “confession” is that one of my all time best dreams was the I was swimming in a pool full of buttons of all sorts, shapes, colours and sizes. I dream not of winning the lottery and raking my hands through piles of gold, but of going on a button hunting spree and raking my hands through piles of old buttons.

  55. hi! i’ve recently discovered your blog and love it! and we just moved to corvallis from virginia so i love all of your oregon love! ok, buttons… antique and thrift stores, garage sales. and i love to put them where i can see them. add them to clothes as decoration, or to fun knitted things i’ve made, or mix match them where they are needed. but like someone else said i am excited to get your book for more ideas! yay! :)

  56. Your button collection blows me away. I can’t imagine how long it took you to fin all those buttons. I can’t wait to see your book.

  57. The book looks amazing! I’d love to have the chance to win it or some buttons! My favorite thing to craft using buttons? A button wreath! It can be used year round or made into a seasonal craft.

  58. My daughters would love it if I won, such creativity you have!

  59. Congrats on the book, it sounds awesome. One place I get buttons is from old clothes. When I clean out the closets and toss old or nonfitting clothes, I keep the buttons. I don’t have a very unique collection yet. I’m still looking for projects.

  60. I like to display them in a jar for decoration.
    Thanks for the giveaway!
    kimspam66(at)yahoo(dot)com

  61. Congrats on your new book! It looks lovely…I’d love a chance to win.

I like using buttons on my scrapbooking pages and in my cards. They add an air of elegance and whimsy!

  62. I just came across your site, was scrolling through and almost gasped out loud when I saw your button book! Buttons are one of my favorite things to work with craft wise, and I was excited to see a whole book devoted to them- lol :) Obviously I would love to win, and I’m pleased to see I caught hold of this before the deadline. What do I do with buttons? I mostly still incorporate them onto handmade cards but would like to start doing more sewing projects with them? Best place to find them – Walmart for $3 you can get a huge bag with a wide variety.

  63. my (now color-sorted) button collection has never looked so appealing…

  64. I’m just so happy with whoever told me to put a toothpick under the button when sewing rather than two pins like my grandma taught me. So many years of sticking myself…

  65. The book looks great. I love the ideas you’ve done with the buttons. Very unique and very original.

  66. My daughter & I love reusing buttons. There are so many different shapes, colors, & designs to play with. As a beginning sewer, she loves using buttons as decorations. Thanks for the contest.

  67. [...] is two weeks until Button It Up is out, I’m very excited! Speaking of giveaways, I’m offering up two signed copies of the book and two hand-picked button stashes from my colle… over on West Coast Crafty — just leave a comment on that post with a favorite button story or [...]

  68. What a great book……

  69. What a neat looking book! I find old clothing at thrift stores and garage sales just for the buttons. My only problem is, I like them so much, I save them. I wont use them up. I mean, what if I can’t find more I like as well! LOL! A serious problem, I know.

  70. This book looks like great fun. As a child I spent hours at my grandmother’s house sorting her buttons that she kept in a fruitcake tin. I would sort by color, style, size, etc. and so began my love of buttons.

    rsgrandinetti@yahoo.com

  71. Congratulations on your new book! My mom has the world’s best tin of buttons – my grandfather (her dad) worked in a button factory in Philadelphia in the 1950s. I’d love to make her something from her dad’s buttons.

  72. What a fun book! Just the picture on the cover makes me want to go fiddle in my sewing room. I love buttons too. I am always on the lookout for them at rummage sales, yard sales, estate sales (!), and auctions. I have inherited my mother’s buttons, my grandmother’s buttons, my mother in law’s buttons, and my husband’s great aunt’s buttons. I am sure my family thinks I am crazy; I have more buttons than I could possibly use in my lifetime. The buttons from family members are in the original tins. The others are sorted by color and fanciness in old pint canning jars with wires that hold the tops on. I have one wall in my sewing room that has a store display system on it. My buttons hang there and add a great touch of color to the room. Very pretty!

  73. buttons!!! i love them. after using up both my grandmothers’ stockpiles, i have been collecting buttons from around the world for years- Costa Rica, Guatemala, the US, Canada, Korea, Vietnam, China. Mostly I use them into make belts. 3-4-inch wide elastic waist belt completely covered in buttons. It takes me about 5 hours to complete one belt, and each button is hand sewn. I love the work. Sorting the buttons into s\color schemes, and choosing the right size and color to fill the next spot is mesmerizing.

  74. Oh, the book sounds fabulous. I’ve got scores and scores of buttons that I can’t seem to find enough uses for. I’ve got the old tin that my great-grandmother and then mother used to store buttons; I’ve got another stash that my best friend’s mom gave to me; more I’ve found at garage sales; and the odd few that I bought at craft stores.
Some of them I’ve sorted by color into baby food jars (which are just not big enough) and have them displayed on a tiered platter because they look good enough to eat.
Oh I can’t wait for the book to find more ways to use them. Hurray!!

  75. The best thing that happened to me in regard to buttons was finding a huge vintage blue Ball Jar filled with old buttons. I still pull from that stash.

  76. This looks like such a fun book! My button story is kinda sad – I had three large tins filled to the brim with buttons. One of my childhood sweatheart’s mums gave them to me when I was 18 and they had buttons from her childhood, and then I continued to add to them. Sometimes I would just dump them out and spend hours looking them over, imagining their stories.
When I was 25 I had to move very suddenly and was forced to leave about 80% of my personal possessions behind, including the buttons. I’ve started a new collection of course, but I mourn that collection so full of soul I had to leave behind.

  77. The book looks lovely! Congrats! I recently found a few button cards from my grandmother’s sewing collection. Having them on my sewing table makes me think of her.

  78. what a fantastic book i think it was writtern just for me:)i use buttons in just about everthing i make and stashing them away, sorting and fiddling is the best part:)pick me pick me!!!

  79. I got the itch about 6 mos ago to start crafting with buttons and I love it! I have gotten some buttons on Ebay but prefer to “go local”. Every once in a while I post a request on Craigslist on the “wanted to buy section” with a request for buttons. Everybody’s got them and some people just want to get rid of them. I got thousands of buttons recently from a schoolteacher who’s grandmother had passed them down to her. We also have some great fleamarkets in New England, my second most favorite way of sourcing buttons!

  80. Susan you make me so proud! Congratulations! I look forward to buying book 3 in my Susan Beal collection.
