sewing for boys
September 15, 2011 at 10:44 am | Posted in books and mags, craft to wear, crafting with kids, oregon, projects to do, reviews and interviews | 77 CommentsI’m so happy to be today’s stop on the Sewing for Boys blog tour with a review and giveaway (read on!). Shelly and Karen have created a fun collection of 24 projects to make for the boys – or girls – in your life, from newborn to age 7, from pants and shirts to hats, belts, and Lego bags. There are full-sized paper patterns included for all the clothes projects, and thorough instructions and diagrams throughout. Be sure to check out the Sewing for Boys flickr group for tons of inspiring photos of reader-made projects!
I have my heart set on making the Treasure Pocket Pants for Pearl (as a good hand-me-down for my little boy Everett), but when I saw the To-Go Artist, I knew that would have to be my first SFB project and the one to show over here with my book review. (It didn’t hurt that Daniela designed the airplane fabric for this one – love it.)
My nephew Julian turned 10 (!) this year and though he’s a little too big for the clothes size ranges here, I knew he would love a portable mini-art studio.
I did a few adaptations to make it more him – left off the shorter crayon holder in favor of a larger one just for colored pencils,
kept it to one main solid fabric with a bright peace-sign print instead of using three different ones, and added a 10 applique on the front.
I also did a few things that made it more me – made a quick handmade binding tape to edge the top of the notebook holder instead of top-stitching,
and used a snap (with a button cover) instead of Velcro since I didn’t have any handy. I also added this little tag, which resurfaced from 2000 or so when I moved my craft room. (This photo also shows the truest color of the solid green canvas I used, a home dec fabric from IKEA that I also sewed Pearl a set of curtains with.)
Here’s another look at the inside. The only thing I wanted to do, but didn’t, was top-stitch the whole perimeter to finish as the instructions mentioned – I love top-stitching, but with up to six layers of thick canvas layered in a few places, my universal needle was not happy. So I hand-stitched the opening with invisible thread and it worked very nicely, it’s not quite as defined but it works. It’s plenty sturdy with all that canvas, especially once I pick up a hard-covered sketchbook to add…
So, on to the giveaway! Wiley sent me my review copy and has generously donated another copy of the book for me to give away to a blog reader, and I’m adding a piece of the print I used (Alexander Henry’s “peace” from 2005, which I bought around then at Michael Levine in LA and just cut into for the first time for this project!). To enter to win the book and fabric, please leave a comment on this post by next Thursday, September 22 (midnight PST), mentioning your favorite craft project you’ve ever made for a kid, and I’ll let Shelly and Karen pick the winner then!
Even better, for locals: Shelly will be signing books at Modern Domestic tomorrow night, September 16, from 6-9, and at Powell’s Books on October 22. Don’t miss Wiley’s author blog and tomorrow’s stop on the blog tour, True Up!

I’d love to have this book. My two boys deserve a little more “mom sewing”.

i’m so glad there’s a book dedicated to boys’ clothes! there is so much out there for girls but lovely boys clothes is truly lacking. we are a pretty crafty family and one of our recent projects was a DIY kitchen my partner made for our son. He loves it!

What a cute art portfolio! Thanks for the giveaway, I would love this book to sew stuff for my son.

I would love to win this book! Although I don’t have any kids of my own, all of the kids and babies in my life are boys and I struggle with coming up with ideas for homemade gifts that they’ll love. My favorite craft project that I ever made for a kid is a tie between a personalized superhero cape for my newphew and a quilt for my friend’s baby boy (my first quilt ever!).
Comment by Lindsay— September 15, 2011 #
My best kids make so far has been a “little cap” that I made in a sew-a-long on the “train to crazy” blog. (http://www.thetraintocrazy.com/little-cap-sew-along/) I have 2 boys who would love Mummy to make them more clothes, so would really love to win this book!
Comment by Tammy— September 15, 2011 #
My favorite gift I ever made for a kid was a stuffed pea to go with the “Little Pea” book. Good for both boys and girls! Thanks for the giveaway. That peace fabric is AMAZING.

I would love to win this book! Thanks for the giveaway! My favorite craft project that I made was a hairbow for my DD.
Comment by Sallie— September 15, 2011 #
It’s hard to choose one because I love making soft toys and have done many for my daughter and for her friends. But your portable mini-art studio reminds me of the pencil rolls I made a couple of years ago. I first made one for my daughter and then all her friends at school wanted it too so I made several

When my oldest son and everyone in our playgroup turned 2, I made them drawing cases similar to the one in your post. I also made them for all of the cousins that year too. I think I made 10-12 of them. Everyone loved them! I had fun making them. I would love a copy of this book!

I think my favorite was last year’s Halloween costume – an owl! I’m eager to see more boy projects…
Comment by hilary— September 15, 2011 #
Oh what a great looking portfolio. LOVE it. I’ve made our Granddaughter all kinds of little things; mostly some American Girl doll clothes and a few little purses for her to play with. Haven’t done too much else yet ’cause she’s only 4yrs old. I have plans to make her some sort of crayon roll soon though now that she’s starting to color quite a bit.
Comment by VickiT— September 15, 2011 #
i have a 2 yo son that i’ve regrettably sewn for very little…i’ve just never seen much that seemed worth the time considering how fast he grows. but this book looks like it has a ton of great things that are so cute and don’t look like his mom made it (in a bad way, if you know what i mean). my favorite things i’ve made for babies/kids are quilts i sell on etsy and a sock monkey with a tutu for a little girl!
Comment by Erin D.— September 15, 2011 #
It’s hard to pick a favorite! But maybe the quilts I made my boys. I would love this book!! Thanks!
Comment by Tara— September 15, 2011 #
The favourite craft project I’ve made for a kid is the gymnastics bag I made for my daughter. It has an embroidered picture of a girl doing gymnastics wearing a suit that is a very close approximation of my daughter’s suit. She gets a big kick out of seeing herself on the bag and it is adorable. A simple tote bag but the embroidery really jazzes it up. I know have a baby boy and would love a copy of the book, if you can deal with mailing to Canada. Yay!
Comment by Adela— September 15, 2011 #
My favorite project would have to be the denim ruffle pants I just made for my little girl. They were super quick to put together, and turned out way cute and we will get tons of use out of them if it ever cools off here. However my boys favorite would have to be the capes I made for them. Would love to win this book, I have a very hard time coming up with cute boy projects!

I made a custom In and Out Burger nametag for my son who was obsessed with dressing up in the In and Out Burger Uniform (red playsilk “apron,” nametag, paper hat, white shirt). I even let him wear it to school picture day, and the photographer was kind enough to take his school photo with the uniform on.
Comment by kelli— September 15, 2011 #
Baby doll diapers…that is why I need this book, need boy ideas!
Comment by Melissa— September 15, 2011 #
My top fave project would be a tote bag I made for my little man from his old jeans and a gown he couldn’t wear anymore. I adore it! It was one of my first sewing adventures and turned out pretty alright. Thank you for hosting this giveaway,

I have made a ton of kids quilts that I love but probably the most fun thing I remember making was for a neice that i gave a Tiny Tears doll to and made a wardrobe to go with it. That neice is over 40 now. It was really fun.

I made goofy monster stuffies from felt last Xmas for all my kids. It was a fun project! I’d love a copy of this book. My girls get clothes all the time, but to having all these boy patterns would inspire me!
Comment by Jen S— September 15, 2011 #
The only thing I’ve made so far are fitted cloth diapers. As soon as the next size is finished I have so many projects to start on. Clothes, a quiet book, diaper bag, nursing cover…. My favorite is still tbd.
Comment by Bethany— September 15, 2011 #
Love the artist to go pencil case! I’m itching to sew some clothes for my son, but am disappointed by the lack of patterns for boys so was super excited to hear of this book! My favorite thing I’ve sewn thus far is a patchwork Easter bunny made from my son’s baby clothes.
Comment by Darcee Maloney— September 15, 2011 #
I made a furry bunny puppet in the 80′s for my kids who are now all grown up. I have not thought about that puppet for a while and it does bring back good memories. Since we are expecting our first grandson this December, this book would be a great addition to my sewing room. Thanks for the giveaway!

I made several crayon rolls last Christmas which were well received
Comment by Gill— September 16, 2011 #
my favorite project is a halloween trick-or-treat bag that looks like an owl. it’s my favorite because it was put together rather spur of the moment, it looks handmade but still good (you know what i mean), and he loves it!

I’d love this book!! My favorite project so far, I think, was some felt food I made for my nephews and niece. I also just made an adorable fabric rocket ship that I think is pretty fantastic, too. I really want to do more clothes sewing for my son, though….
Comment by Aubrey— September 16, 2011 #
This book sounds wonderful. I’d love to make clothes for my grandsons with it. The best crafts I made for kids include a cowboy themed busy book and a tent that was shaped like a space shuttle. Oh yes, dozens of realistic animal puppets for puppet shows.
Comment by Sue— September 16, 2011 #
I’ve been working on cute crayon rolls for my nieces and nephews for Christmas this year and love them!
Comment by Jenn— September 16, 2011 #
The best gift I made for my nephew was a chef hat and butcher style apron make out of black fabric with flames. He loves it and uses it all the time. Usually while making big messes in the kitchen
Comment by Emily— September 16, 2011 #
Ooo my favourite boy craft project…that’s hard since I neglect the boys (oops..maybe this book can fix that) think it would be an appliqued t-shirt. That’s very boring isn’t it…

My favorite crafty project for my son was a ‘car roll-up’ kind of like the crayon roll-ups for traveling, but for Hot Wheels cars. There are little garages aka pockets for the cars scattered over a placemat sized piece of flannel. It rolls up & folds in half and all the garages open towards the center so no cars can fall out! Now, there is always a spot for him to play with cars and we never lose them!
Comment by MJ— September 16, 2011 #
My favorite crafty project I made for my little guy was a flannel hockey quilt. It’s an Ohio Star pattern. I stitched Red Wings logos with embroidery thread on the center of each star. I added a prairie points boarder

I want a copy of this book so badly!!! I have a 19 month little boy that is a little long in the legs, and really long in the torso, and extremely long in the rise so he’s very hard to fit to store bought clothes. I have started making him patterns and clothes and I’m pretty good a making things fit him but I sure could use this book to expand his wardrobe. There are so many cute projects that he would love!

I love yours! I redid mine, but didn’t think to do it in two pieces, like yours. Good thinking! Mine is a bit more slipcover-style and a lot less tailored.
I’m inspired…
Comment by Lori— September 17, 2011 #
My favorite craft for kids is something I can either do with them or is something quick and easy to surprise them with. My daughter wanted to be a lion for Halloween, and I picked up a super sweet pullover lion vest/hoodie, then made her a quick but SUPER fluffy tutu to match while she was sleeping. She was SOOOOOO excited to be a “girl” lion and the costume was a huge hit!
Comment by Karin— September 17, 2011 #
My favorite kid project is the zippered cuff wallets I made for my boys for sports day last school year. They were the perfect place to send money in for the concession and I didn’t have to worry about the money going missing. Thanks for a chance to win the boys pattern book!
Comment by Carla G— September 18, 2011 #
I don’t know if this giveaway is open to international readers but for a great prize like this I thought it was worth a shot!
I’d love to win this book and make things for my 2 little boys, 3 years old and 5 months old. Maybe you could send me some time too
I haven’t made that many things for them so far (see comment above re time…) but I think my favourite was a taggie with crinkly plastic inside for my little one – quick and easy to make and he seems to love it!
Comment by Diane— September 18, 2011 #
My favorite craft project was my son’s owl Halloween costume last year. He still wears the felt mask for dress up and makes the cutest owl sound. I’m so excited about this book!

My favorite craft project was the fleece stuffed dinosaurs my husband sewed (with a lot of encouragement and technical help from me). Followed by a dress-up box full of capes and crowns and clip-on animal tails. We have three boys and need cute patterns!
Comment by Mira— September 19, 2011 #
We recently found a box full of hand puppets at the flea market that were much ‘loved’ by their previous owners. We had a ball making new clothes for them…and that just happened to be a start.. Now its onto furniture and accessories, every time little ones are over, there’s more building and making going on. That with all the ‘theater’ productions featuring the puppets has been one of the most satisfying crafty projects’.
Comment by Sheetal— September 20, 2011 #
oh, this is super cute! it’s really nice to see something made from the book that isn’t clothing – the clothing is amazing, and super cute, but not always practical for handmade gifts!
i’m an “auntie” to lots of babies, and a “fairy godparent” to one special boy, so i’ve made a lot of fun stuff over the past few years… i really love the glitter vinyl bibs that i’ve made with personalized machine embroidery, and the giant stuffed arrow that i made my godson (he was obsessed with arrows as a toddler, but oddly, there are no arrow toys!), and the dress up costumes my cousins got when they were little, but the craft that’s gotten the most use over the years is actually something that i threw together at the last minute – beanbags!
i made them for a birthday party, and because we didn’t want anything organic in them that could be spoiled by moisture (living on the west coast and all), i filled them with plastic beads that i’d bought at SCRAP a few years earlier. they were kind of like pony beads, but not quite as nicely shaped, and i have no idea why i hauled them home from portland, but they were perfect! and super cheap, since i’d picked them up at SCRAP.
