about Button It Up
Button It Up is a collection of 80 craft projects to make with vintage (and new) buttons — a mix of jewelry, housewares and decorations, embellishments, gifts, and accessories. I’ve also written a section on button history and added some of my favorite resources for finding amazing buttons and craft supplies. And I’ve set up a book site at buttonitupbook.com with lots of extras — bonus templates and patterns, resources for finding button treasures, book reviews, and a mini-blog about buttons and crafty stuff.
The book was released on March 3, 2009 — so you can buy it on Amazon or ask for it at your favorite local bookstore! I’ll have signed copies in my Etsy shop, too.
You can also search inside the book on Amazon for some colorful sneak peeks.

Hi Susan,
Recently I received a gift card for our local Chapters (Indigo) bookstore from my daughter, and I used it to buy “Button It Up”. Your book is great and I really liked the great instructions. I haven’t made anything yet but will soon since I usually make my daughter tons of things every Christmas.
I live in Ontario, Canada, and unfortunately we don’t have as many great resources for buttons but I have found some great ones in the bulk packages on occasion, and salvage as many as I can find from old clothing, etc.
I started really paying attention to and enjoying the versatility of buttons/recycling buttons when I made my daughter a “Buttons Galore” sweatshirt many years ago. This idea came from an old issue of Better Homes and Gardens. Essentially you just sew any number of buttons all over the front of the sweatshirt in any pattern and choice of buttons you want. It takes patiences if you want to sew a lot on but it is fun to look through all the buttons to find “one of a kinds” and so on. I have made my daughter many more shirts since then, revising my pattern/design as she has gotten older. In recent years I have switched over to T-shirts since that is her preference. One tip on doing this on T-shirts: use shirts with good quality, semi heavy fabric–the cheaper “undershirt” types are too thin and the buttons tend to sag or pull on the fabric too much. I always use 3 strands of embroidery floss to sew the buttons on–this is easier to work with and the variety of colors is great when your thread with show.
